my father who is 76 yrs old, has a CT Scan showing hime to have a severely distended bladder and causes severe left hydroureteronephrosis with marked cortical scarring. Mild right pelviectasis is seen. Small left upper renal cortical cyst is seen. Left adrenalhyperplasia. What does this mean?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Distended bladder with severe hydroureteronephrosis implies that there is obstruction at some level beyond urinary bladder. This obstruction is causing distention of the bladder and the back pressure changes are causing distention of the ureter and the kidney also. These back pressure changes have caused damage to the kidney parenchyma. There is also stasis of urine in the pelvis of the kidney. In addition, a cortical cyst is also seen in the upper pole of one of the kidney. There is also enlargement of the adrenal gland also. The obstruction is most probably at the level of prostate since prostatic enlargement is common in elderly males. The back pressure changes can be relieved once the cause of obstruction is treated or managed.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
